Indoor and outdoor positioning in Tampere city centre area
CityTrack project is developing a test site for companies and organisations where they can plan, develop and pilot location-based services in a densely populated and service intensive urban environment. The CityTrack research project is a joint effort of Open Location Platform company HERE, technology provider Beemray, Local public sector representatives City of Tampere and the Tampere Region Economic Development Agency Tredea, the piloting partners, which currently include Finnpark, Kesko, Tampere Hall and S Group.
A central aim of the CityTrack research project is to translate location information to added value for consumers who move about in the city centre. New services will be introduced in the test site at and around the Tampere railway station in order to help people find suitable connecting train routes, restaurants and shops.
CityTrack provides tools and analyzed information to enhance their services in dense urban areas. This is achieved through combining contextual awareness of location data, traffic and people flow. Furthermore, this approach is enhanced by open traffic data, customer preferences, and customer engagement. In Tampere city centre around the railway station CityTrack area includes shopping malls, parking halls, event venues, university campus, tourist attractions, and conference facilities.
The positioning works also indoors with wireless internet and Bluetooth technology. Therefore CityTrack offers seamless outdoor and indoors positioning, routing and maps. The services and applications developed in the area can be exported to any other location using Here assets. The project is coordinated by the University of Tampere by researchers working at the School of Information Science and the School of Management and funded by Tekes – the Finnish Funding Agency for Innovation.
